Monsoon Thunderstorm Safety Tips

Remember these important safety tips in the event of a monsoon storm or thunderstorm with lightning:

 

BEFORE THE STORM

  • Check weather forecast before extended outdoor periods.
  • Monitor the sky for approaching storms.
  • Carry NOAA Weather Radio, AM/FM radio, or web-capable cell phone.
  • Postpone outdoor activities during severe thunderstorm warnings.

LIGHTNING SAFETY

  • Lightning can strike up to 60 miles from rainfall; if thunder is heard, seek safe shelter.
  • Safe locations: sturdy buildings, hard-topped vehicles
  • Stay indoors until 30 minutes after the last thunder rumble.
  • Avoid open areas, armadas, porches, trees, convertible cars, and pools.

OUTDOOR PLANNING

  • Avoid outdoor activities in mid-afternoon to mid-evening, especially in higher elevations.
  • If caught outside during lightning risk, find a low spot away from trees, fences, and poles.

INDOOR SAFETY

  • Don’t touch wires or plumbing during storms.
  • Unplug unnecessary appliances; avoid corded phones.
  • Bring pets indoors during storms.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE

  • Call 911 immediately if someone is struck by lightning.
