  • Age: You must be at least 18 years old by July 5, 2026.
  • Education: A high school diploma, GED, or higher degree is required.
  • Driver’s License: You must have a valid driver’s license at the time you apply, and a valid Arizona driver’s license by the first day of the Academy.

That’s it! No prior fire service or EMT experience required. You bring the commitment, and we’ll provide the training!

Application Period:
June 5 – July 5, 2026

How to Apply:

  • Complete the online application
  • Upload a copy of your high school diploma, GED, or higher degree

Important: A high school diploma, GED, or higher degree is required for all positions at Northwest Fire District. We need a copy of your diploma or transcripts that clearly shows your graduation date. Copies are acceptable. Applications submitted without this documentation will not be considered, so please be sure to attach it!

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOU APPLY

COMMUNICATION THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS

You may be contacted at any point during the application period or selection process with updates, next steps, or scheduling information. To ensure you don’t miss any important communication, we recommend adding hr@nwfdaz.gov to your email contacts.

Next Steps in the Selection Process

Online Assessment

Applicants moving forward in the process will be invited to complete an online assessment that evaluates cognitive ability, motivation, and personality as they relate to being a firefighter. You will receive an email with instructions within approximately two weeks of submitting your application.

One-Way Video Interview

You will also be invited to complete a one-way video interview. Be sure to treat this like a live interview. Prepare thoughtfully and use this opportunity to help us get to know you. You will receive an email with instructions within approximately two weeks of submitting your application.

Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)

The CPAT is used to ensure candidates can meet the physical demands of the firefighter position. Northwest Fire provides orientations, practice sessions, and the official test. You’ll receive email instructions with dates and scheduling information. Passing the CPAT is required to remain in the selection process; however, a passing CPAT score does not guarantee advancement to the panel interview.

Panel Interview

Candidates selected to move forward will participate in a panel interview with the Fire Chief. This is your opportunity to showcase your strengths, communication skills, and alignment with the District’s mission and values. If you advance to this step, you’ll receive an email with instructions, including dates and scheduling details.

Final Steps

Candidates who advance beyond the panel interview will receive a contingent job offer. Final employment is conditional upon the successful completion of all pre-employment requirements, which may include, but are not limited to, a psychological evaluation, drug screening, background checks (e.g., criminal history and driving record), reference checks, and a pre-employment physical.

CPAT Information and Preparation

Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
Northwest Fire District (NWFD) uses the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) as part of the recruitment and selection process for our fire academies. The CPAT is a nationally recognized, pass/fail physical abilities test used by fire organizations across the country to assess whether candidates can meet the physical demands of the fire service.

Please review the following important information regarding NWFD’s CPAT process:

  • CPAT testing must be completed through Northwest Fire District. NWFD does not accept CPAT cards, certificates, or test results from any other agency, organization, fire department, or testing provider.
  • NWFD provides CPAT orientations, practice sessions, and an official test as part of the recruitment process.
  • Participation in the orientation sessions is optional. Candidates who choose not to attend an orientation session will be required to sign a waiver. However, we strongly recommend attending the orientation and practice sessions, especially if this is your first time taking the CPAT.
  • If you pass the CPAT during a practice session, that result will be accepted as your official test score, and you will not need to attend the scheduled official test.
  • The CPAT is administered by NWFD’s Peer Fitness Team, a group of specially trained firefighters dedicated to helping candidates succeed. They are available to provide guidance and support throughout the process.

What does it mean to be a Probationary Firefighter?

The first year of employment as a new firefighter is a probationary period. This can be a stressful experience. The probationary firefighter is expected to learn a large amount of information while demonstrating a strong work ethic. Upon completion of the Fire Academy, the firefighter is assigned to a fire station. Training continues at the station through book work, practical drills, and a significant amount of on-the-job training. During the probationary year, the new firefighter is required to complete a series of predetermined training modules while working their assigned shifts. After completing each module, the probationary firefighter must successfully pass both a written and practical skills test. If the firefighter successfully passes all the required modules, they will become a non-probationary employee.
